Naukuchiatal Lake | Nainital

Altitude from sea level 1219 m . At a distance of some 24 km from Nainital and 5km from Bhimtal is the Naukuchiyatal Lake. It is the deepest (135 ft.) and probably the most tranquil lake of the region that has acquired the name of Lake District. The lake is called so in local dialect because it has nine lopsided corners. Bounded by dense, verdant jungles, Naukuchiyatal is a very appealing setting enthralling everyone with its daunting charisma. The forests are the home to a plethora of Himalayan flora and fauna and provide ample opportunities for long walks in the lap of nature. Naukuchiyatal is a matchless combine of natural beauty and society. Surrounded by Oak and Whispering Willows, this pretty and neat lake town is frequented throughout the year by tourists and travellers. The hills adjoining Naukuchiatal have, in recent years, become favourite with paragliding-enthusiasts.

In the first years of the 1820’s the British were gradually discovering Kumaon. A Jesuit Missionary by the name of Naukuchiya-TalBishop Hybber found himself at the Himalayan foothills during his journeys in the Northern part of India. He reached Naukuchiyatal via Kalichaud after crossing the Gaula River near Haldwani-Kathgodam. The route taken up by Hybber had been witness to some major events in the history and politics of Kumaon including the  battle with the Rohillas. There are several historical landmarks in and around Naukuchiyatal to be explored by the inquisitive souls.

Naukuchiatal Lake is definitely the most spectacular lake in the lake-district of Nainital. It is located at an altitude of 1219 meters above the sea level and is spread through 9 corners in the tiny hamlet of Naukuchiatal. This lake is enclosed by profuse oak forests. Naukuchiytal Lake is also known for its mythological value. It is believed that one can attain spiritual enlightenment on having a view of all the nine corners of the lake from one vantage point.
Several exceptional varieties of birds and wildlife are to be found in the forest surrounding the lake. Visitors also love this lake for the beautiful presence of butterfly species around this lake. All these features make this lake the most photo-perfect location of Naukuchiytal.

How To Reach Naukuchiyatal/Naukuchiatal Lake :-

The closest railway station is Kathgodam lies at a distance of 33 kilometers from the Naukuchiatal. Traveler can get the train from Delhi which is at 280 kilometers from Kathgodam Station. Especially there are two trains which run on a regular basis fro Delhi to Kathgodam and Kathgodam to Delhi. There are several other trains available along this route, as Kathgodam is the doorway of the well known Kumaon region. From Kathgodam railway station, you can hire taxis as well as buses are also availed for the pilgrims and tourists.
