Android App For Women Safety In Nainital – ‘SOS Pukar’
Nainital Police has constituted Project Shouryaa to make Nainital a safer city for women, both tourists and residents. Under this project, an android phone application – PUKAR was launched on Aug 15 by Mrs. Indira Hridayesh, Minister of Finance (Uttarakhand) and Mrs. Vimmi Sachdeva, SSP Nainital.
The app, launched on the android platform, has been developed with the aim of keeping a check on the increasing number of cyber crime against women in the city. It will help women deal with any emergent situation they may face.
The software, which can be downloaded on android phones through the Google Play Store, is designed to feed contact numbers of relatives and the police.” In case of emergency, a woman can press the ‘SOS Shourya‘ button and a danger message will immediately be sent to the selected numbers. “The police control room will instantly be able to track the number and take required action against the accused,” she said.
Keeping in mind the rise in the number of crimes against women, Nainital police on March 2, 2014 had formed team Shouryaa – a specialized group of policemen and women who have undergone rigorous training on various aspects related to women safety.
A lady sub inspector and six constables including female constables are the part of the team. The team carries out surprise drives around college campuses, crowded public places and other locations from where most cases of eve-teasing and molestation and other crimes against women have been reported.
To prevent crime against women with the help of social media or applications, team Shouryaa has been equipped with a technically trained unit called “Cyber Shourya” which will deal with cyber complaints in a professional manner.
“Team Shouryaa” took an initiative to start “Safety Alert SMS” through various mobile operators to create gender awareness in the district. Though the crime rate in Naintal is less as compared to the rest of the country, crime against women has gone up by 2.5 times in the last three years. In 2013, 20 cases of rape, 51 of kidnapping, 38 of eve-teasing, and 7 cases of murder amongst other crimes were reported.
“The motto of Shouryaa is ‘Sahyog Apka, Sewa Hamari‘. It has been launched with the sole objective of making Nainital a safer place for women and reduce the number of crimes against them,” the SSP added.
